...check the template code carefully for errors, redundant tags and incorrect DTDs.
...make sure it displays correctly in different browsers and loads quickly.

Art for the web - About 80 (?) very nice looking, easy-to-edit free templates with valid HTML. If you're going to use a free template, I'd recommend these.
